This guide is going to go through the top common cycling mistakes you might be making and how you can avoid these and really make the most of your rides.
Common Cycling Mistakes You Might Be Making
Under Inflated Tyres
As small of an issue under inflated tyres might seem, they can actually cause a big problem if left long enough. Not only does it increase your chances of getting a completely flat tyre, or your tyre popping. It can also reduce your speed and can even cause damage to your rims.
It's recommended to check tyre pressure once a week and before any long rides.
It's handy to have your own bike pump just in case you need to top up some air and you have two different options, a Bike Track Pump or a Bike Hand Pump which is ideal to take on your rides with you, just in case you might need to add more air to your tyre mid journey.
Saddle Height is Wrong
As small as it may seem, having your saddle at the wrong height can cause multiple issues.
If the saddle is too low, you won't be able to get enough power out of your legs and you will be spending a lot of time and energy without going too far. However,if your saddle is too high, you run the risk of injury, discomfort and instability. It can cause an overworking on your leg muscles which can cause more issues in the long run.
There are many different ways to see if your saddle is at the right height, but an easy (albeit unscientific) way to is if your leg has a slight bend in the knee when it's at the bottom of the pedal stroke. If you're using this method then make sure the ball of your foot is positioned over the centre of the pedal axle.
There are a lot more methodical ways of checking that you'll be able to find across the internet.
Having a Dry Chain
Having a dry/unlubed bike chain isn't just an ear sore, it can actually have an effect on how effective your ride actually is. Not only that, riding on a dry chain can cause unnecessary damage to other components.
To avoid having a dry chain, make sure you are regularly topping up the chain lube and you're using the correct chain lube for your bike. Make sure you're not applying the lube over a dirty chain as can again cause unnecessary wear and damage to the chain.
Poor Preparation
The final point we want to make is not being as prepared as you should be. You don't want to be caught short with a flat tyre on a country road. If you're going out on a long ride, make sure you always have a way of re-inflating your tyres or a mini tool kit that means you can do some quick fixes if needs be.
You also need to be prepared for anything that the weather can throw at you. That includes having light layers incase it rains and having reflective clothing so that you're visible in low light.
If you are struggling with your bike, one of the best places to go to is your local bike shop. They will be able to help answer any questions you might have about your bike. Then once your bike is sorted, we can get you get your cycling kit together.
